Remember "Save the ridge" - well that "Bradley" property has miles of 16' wide ROADS on it that we could ride (off of Awosting Road, town of Shawangunk). They are talking about opening up the old Smiley Carraigeway that drops down into Ellenville. There is no reason we shouldn't have a local place to ride. So we need people to write letters and hit the following points:

  • SMSRC was founded in 1972 to be a snowmobile AND RESCUE club on the ridge.
  • we have performed search and rescue operations on the ridge in recent years.
  • we have a dedicated rescue unit ready to go should other winter activities need us in an emergency situation. (ice climbing, snowshoeing, x-country skiing)
  • we want to "decriminalize" snowmobiling (that's a joke.. somebody said they wanted to "decriminalize" swimming)
  • we have about 100 FAMILIES (with kids) that need a safe place to learn to ride
  • very little user conflict as winter use is very limited.
  • we add over $800 million to NY's economy every year
  • we take our money upstate instead of spending it here
  • there are virtually no snowmobile trails in Ulster County
  • snowmobiling does not disturb wildlife
  • snowmobiling has very little impact on plants since we ride on appropriate snow cover
  • snowmobilers are willing to do some volunteer work to maintain trails

some of their (State Parks) key points are:

  • they want to provide NEW OPPORTUNITIES for recreation
  • the plan for this park needs to be EMBRACED BY THE COMMUNITY (that's us)

  • 7/10/08 Update - Million Dollar Sweep of Trail Fund

    Please click here to view associated press releases

    Attention NYSSA Members:

    I have had the privilege of working very closely with the NYSSA leadership team over the past several months to respond to the snowmobile trail fund budget situation. Through these efforts, and with the partnership of the NYS legislature, we have been successful in communicating our concerns to state officials representing OPRHP, the Division of Budget (DOB) and the office of the governor. In response to these discussions, the governor's press release highlights 3 key actions:

    1. The NYS snowmobile trail grants process will be revised to ensure that in the future, snowmobile registration fees will be spent solely on trail maintenance and related activities.
    2. The DOB and OPRHP have projected that grant payments to clubs will increase from $2.8 million in 2007-2008 to $5.3 million in 2008-2009. This represents an 85% increase in funding to the clubs.
    3. Over the next three seasons, the governor has directed that $1 million from OPRP and DEC snowmobile trail funding be diverted into the snowmobile trail development and maintenance fund.

    The governor himself has characterized these actions as a "big win for NY snowmobilers", and I could not agree more. Your elected officials, representatives of state agencies, and NYSSA leadership have all worked together to improve the state of snowmobiling in New York. This partnership is important. We are successful because NYSSA and its members spoke with one voice when addressing the NYS budget process to our elected leaders.

    Let us not forget to thank those who have partnered with us and helped us to protect and improve snowmobiling in New York State. I ask you to join me in thanking our advocates in the Capitol Group: Nick Barella, Tim Sheridan and Bruce Geiger. Without their relationships with key individuals in Albany, and their complete grasp of the processes and inner workings on the government of NY, we would not have come out on top. Rory Whelan of Whelan Media Strategies, our public relations and media strategist, has provided invaluable counsel and is also deserving of our gratitude. I also want to personally thank Jim Jennings and Dave Perkins, NYSSA executive director and trails coordinator, and Gary Broderick, NYSSA vice-president, for their role in helping lead us forward.

    What should not be lost in our discussions, however, is to make sure that we thank the snowmobilers of New York. It is truly because of their dedication to the issues we face, and the tremendous grass-roots efforts in contacting their elected leaders, that we have succeeded. It is the 100,000 snowmobilers who participate in our sport, and who are responsible for the $1 billion economic engine that is New York snowmobiling that are most deserving of our gratitude. As we move ahead we must take the opportunity to thank the club members and their families who took the time to make their voice heard in Albany.

    Therefore, on behalf of the NYSSA leadership and partners, thank you all for your consideration, concern, support, and hard work.

    With congratulations and warm regards,
    Mike Fischer
    NYSSA PRESIDENT

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
    January 8, 2008
    Contact: James Jennings, Executive Director, 518-624-3849

    ASSOCIATION URGES SNOWMOBILE SAFETY
    Early Season Accidents Prompt Safety Message.

    Long Lake, NY – With the snowmobile season underway, state association officials are concerned about several recent snowmobile accidents, including some that resulted in fatalities. The New York State Snowmobile Association (NYSSA) wants to remind snowmobilers to take proper precautions to have a safe ride.

    “Snowmobiling is a rewarding and enjoyable sport,” says Jim Jennings, NYSSA Executive Director, who adds that “observing speed limits and taking the proper safety measures will help ensure that it stays that way.”

    Jennings notes that officials from the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (OPRHP) blame excessive speed for many snowmobile accidents. The maximum allowable speed for snowmobiling in New York is 55 mph, unless otherwise posted, but paying attention to local trail conditions is paramount to safe riding. “Many trails are routed on terrain where slower speeds are prudent, so exercising caution in unfamiliar areas is important” Jennings says.

    NYSSA member clubs are responsible for installing signs along snowmobile routes to provide direction to riders as well as noting hazards along the trail. Many of this season’s accidents occurred along local roadways or other areas away from the official trails. In fact, according to the American Council of Snowmobile Associations (ACSA), only about 10-15% of snowmobile incidents occur on well maintained and designed trails where as much as 80-90% of all snowmobile riding takes place. Snowmobiling on roadways requires additional caution in order to avoid collisions with other motor vehicles, and riding in unsigned areas may expose the operator to unseen hazards. “Know where you ride, and ride where you know,” Jennings advises, adding that conditions change constantly.

    One recent fatality occurred along the Erie Canal towpath in Canastota, NY. The preliminary report from NYS Parks Police indicated that imprudent speed was the chief factor in that accident, causing the operator to lose control of the snowmobile and strike a tree. The Erie Canal is one trail area that is posted at 25 mph. Other routes have reduced speed limits, and many towns and villages have adopted ordinances that set maximum snowmobile speeds within their jurisdictions.

    Dave Perkins, NYSSA Trails Coordinator, agrees that attention to safety should not be overlooked. “The best was to ensure a safe snowmobiling experience is to pay attention and ride within the appropriate speed,” and adds that “additional care should be taken when riding at night.” Perkins stresses that riding at excessive speed at night can cause snowmobilers to outrun their headlights. By the time the rider sees a hazard, it might be too late to avoid.

    Perkins offers the following tips from the ACSA:

    • Respect and obey trail, speed and other signs.
    • Respect land owners’ property when a trail runs through their private property.
    • Respect others who use the trails, like other snowmobilers, cross country skiers, hikers, snowshoe users and dogsleds.
    • Use slow speeds to prevent injury to yourself and others who may be ahead of you, around turns, corners and over blind hills.
    • Speed limits should be obeyed at all times. This is not only for your safety, but for the safety of others.
    • Respect the groomers, the machines that plow the snow and restore the trails you ride.
    • Be safe and courteous at all times. Each time you ride your snowmobile, you should portray that snowmobilers take safety seriously. Snowmobilers may visit the NYSSA Website at www.nyssnowassoc.org/ for more information.

    URGENT MESSAGE:  Ferris Lake Wild Forest Draft Unit Management Plan released

    Read the Plan online here, or request a printed or CD copy from Mr. Kasza, below.

    Your written comments in support of keeping "dead end" snowmobile trails open in this Wild Forest are needed
    by Friday, December 1, 2006. Please direct them to:

    Eric J. Kasza, Senior Forester
    NYSDEC
    PO Box 89
    225 N. Main Street
    Herkimer, NY 13350

    Email: r5ump@gw.dec.state.ny.us

    A partial list of recommended management actions in the Draft UMP include:

    • Improving trail information and recreational opportunities for people with disabilities, including the development of accessible camping sites and two canoe access sites;
    • Designating and improving approximately 8.8 miles of existing unmarked foot trail and the development of approximately 7.0 miles of new foot trail;
    • Closing approximately 16.7 miles of snowmobile trail due to lack of public use on dead end trails, maintenance considerations, environmental concerns, and the elimination of redundant trails. The trails will remain open for hiking, bicycling and horseback riding;
    • Posting a number of roads against motor vehicle use, posting open roads for continued motor vehicle use, and temporarily closing one road to public motor vehicle use until it is rehabilitated. The majority of road closures involve roads less than 0.5 miles long that lead to private inholdings or do not provide significant access to DEC programs. The longer road sections begin on private lands with unclear public access rights;
    • Recommending reclassification of the West Lake Boat Launch to an Intensive Use Area;
    • Enacting special regulations to manage public use at Stewart Landing, such as parking, camping, swimming and trailered boat launching restrictions; and
    • Establishing and maintaining several quality fisheries.

    SMSRC Earns Coveted
    "NYSSA Club of the Year "Award!

    SMSRC members Bill Dammeyer, Tony Rozzi, and Rich Rozzi
    accept the award  at NYSSA's Annual Awards Banquet, April 8, 2006.

    Watertown, NY - Shawangunk Mountain Snowmobile and Rescue Club was awarded the "NYSSA Club of the Year" award on April 8 at NYSSA's 2006 Annual Awards Banquet in Watertown, New York. The award is given annually to a club that demonstrates that its activities and events help promote or improve the image of snowmobiling.

    Due to inconsistent snowfall, SMSRC's activities don't include trail maintenance, but the club has been very valuable to NYSSA, particularly this year.

    This club is extremely politically active.  The Club recently sent 68 letters to Governor Pataki regarding the proposed sweep of Snowmobile Trail Fund money into the State's General Fund. The Club was also a strong supporter of the Snowmobile Rights and Responsibilities Act, even though it does not benefit directly from the increased money the act directs to the Snowmobile Trail Fund.
    Most of the club's activities benefit the local community. By far the most important service this club provides is search and rescue capabilities.  Rescues began as early as 1975, when members rescued 8 people (among them two 3 year old children, a woman

    8 months pregnant, and a man recuperating from an appendectomy) from the rugged terrain of Sam’s Point when their four-wheel drive truck mired in a snow bank.

    This year the Club was able to purchase a 2005 Skidoo Skandic snowmobile to be used specifically for its search-and-rescue efforts. More recently, a man injured while “caving” illegally in the NYSDEC’s Bashakill Wildlife Management Area in Westbrookville was rescued. Ice hampered rescue efforts; club members ferried personnel and supplies up the mountain on snowmobiles with studded tracks. The rescue took 10 hours; temperatures were in the teens.

    During the 2005-2006 season, the club held several New York State sanctioned snowmobile safety courses.  One session alone educated over 100 people, mostly juniors under 16 years old.  The course is provided at no charge to the participants.

    The club holds an adopt-a-highway cleanup along eight miles of roadway through its community. Signs posted at either end of the roadway are constant reminders that snowmobiling is a popular activity in the area and alert drivers to the possible presence of the machines.

    An annual scholarship is awarded to ten students each year, five in Ulster County and five in Orange County, with funds raised from a limited 50-50 raffle. Food drives and toys-for tots events are held. Community businesses are involved by providing sponsorship for a local trail map produced by the club. Club members receive discounts by showing their membership cards at these establishments.

    On April 22, the Club will celebrate its 35th Anniversary with an Anniversary Dinner. Many of the original members are still active participants.

    #####

    Far from being a “social club”, the Shawangunk Mountain Snowmobile and Rescue Club may not build bridges on trails, but the bridges we build in our communities are just as important to our Sport.  Contact us at smsrc1@hotmail.com or SMSRC, PO Box 872, Pine Bush, NY 12566. The club meets on the 2nd Wednesday of each month, September through April, at the Catholic War Veterans'  in Pine Bush.

    SNOWMOBILE CLUB PURCHASES RESCUE EQUIPMENT
    Pine Bush, NY – The Shawangunk Mountain Snowmobile and Rescue Club, based in Pine Bush, NY, has purchased a snowmobile dedicated for use as a rescue vehicle.  The 2006 Skidoo Skandic is a specialized snowmobile with low range gears designed for heavy work.  “We found that our personal snowmobiles often didn’t have the power needed to move the personnel and equipment to a rescue site” stated Club President Fred Hallock. The Club participated in two rescues last year, and covers Orange, Ulster, and Sullivan counties.

    The club also purchased a dogsled-style trailer which can be loaded with gear and passengers and towed in to a rescue site. “We now have a complete unit, ready to go” said Jerry Hlavacek, former President. “We now have the Skandic, the rescue boggan, and the dogsled in a trailer, ready and waiting to go out on a call.”

    A training session was held recently so that Club members could become familiar with the equipment and its use. “This vehicle doesn’t handle like an ordinary snowmobile” said Hlavacek, “It has a tremendous amount of power and doesn’t turn as readily as we’re used to.” Members practiced maneuvering through a course of traffic cones with the rescue boggan behind the Skandic. “We do hope we don’t get called out, but if an emergency arises, we’re ready!” said Hlavacek.

    The Shawangunk club meets the 2nd Wednesday of each month, at 7:30 pm, at the Catholic War Veterans, Center Street, Pine Bush. New members residing in Orange, Ulster, and Sullivan counties are welcome. Contact club Secretary Jessica Dammeyer for more information at 845-692-7229.
